This was short course running annually for 7 weeks in Autumn, led by Malcolm Johnson. It began in 2009 and was finally offered in 2022. 10 separate courses took place in total and about 225 members attended over the years.
The course covered the history of the English Language, from Old English through the Middle Ages to Modern English. Many aspects of the course could still be explored in much more detail, and there are also many other issues in relation to our language which might be examined in future.
Therefore, this heading will remain in the Groups list and it is open to any member, or group of members, to take on the "leadership" of a new Group, meeting at regular intervals, rather than as a discrete course. The "Leader(s)" would need no expert knowledge, just an interest in the English Language; all its delights and complexities. Malcolm Johnson will give full support in the setting up of the Group to anyone who comes forward to take it on.
