Albania: A Secret Land Revealed
Speaker: Professor Joyce Hill
Under Enver Hoxha (ruled 1944-85), Albania was a closed and secret land: no one allowed out, and no one allowed in. But in the days of the Roman and Byzantine Empires, the highway of civilization ran straight through it: the Via Egnatia linking Rome and Constantinople. It later became part of the Venetian trading world, and later still an important part of the Ottoman Empire. The lecture reveals this extraordinarily layered history of a land still largely unknown to us.
